Its a long way to Kununurra - 14 July

Up early (at least early for us - all other campers get up at the crack of dawn!)

Joesph straight off to play with his new friend Harry, and Barnaby Bear with Harry's bear.

Then it was off to Kununurra, at the same time as the ex pat family from Adelaide next door.

Long and monotonous road you may think, but we enjoyed the expanse and the scenery. Saw a fairly large Kangaroo which jumped out in front of our van, and a 3 foot Lizard, although we were unable to stop and take a photo as we had a vehicle on our tail.

Few other vehicles on the road, and the vast majority of vehicles on the road were either caravans or campers - it must be very very quiet off tourist season (and this must be close to peak tourist season).

We tried listening to music, then gave in and let the kids watch a DVD.

Some changes in scenery as we approached Gregory National Park - which had some stunning scenery and ranges. Gregory National Park is on the border between tropical climate and semi arid climate with boab trees starting to come more common. If you put your ear to them and hit them it sounds like hitting a barrel - they soak up the water.

Stopped for lunch and caught up with our new found friends in Timber Creek - bit of a one horse town (pop 250 people) with extortionate Diesel Prices - although I am told they will get even more expensive still as we push further into the outback. And the van we are in does not half drink fuel - so the fuel bill may well be more than we budgeted for!

Stopped at the Western Australia border for quarantine checks (no fresh fruit or veg, and inspection for cane toads), where we lost our onions!

Then onto our campsite. Unfortunately we were not able to book in the same site as Josephs new best buddy - it was full, so am in another Kununarra site. Perfectly adequate, but Joseph missing his friend!

We last came to Kununarra in 1992. That was before the Bungle Bungles were classed a world heritage site. It has grown hugely and has one all sorts of awards as the best tourist destination in WA. Last time there were just 2 back packers hostels, and only 2 tour companies offering trips to the bungle bungles. Now there are zillions, and the cost of a flight over the bungle bungles is more than £160 so a complete no go I am afraid

Not sure if we will stay here 2 or 3 nights, then its the best park of 800k to Broome, where we fear all campsites will also be full! Its school holidays here - and its also full too of grey nomads escaping the cooler climates of down south - pensioners who spend 3 months of the year of so on the road. We met one whose state of art off road  caravan cost more than our first house!

Stayed at Ivanhoe Village Caravan Resort, Kununurra, WA 6743
