We were on the road by shortly after 8am, not exactly sure where we would spend the next night - another roadside camp?, Derby or Broome.
Speaking to other travellers we have learned that Broome is particularly busy at the moment as
its WA school holidays.
- Grey nomads migrate here in their droves to avoid the "harsh" winter down south - many with semi permanent bookings on campsites
- On top of this its a full moon and this attracts people to see the stairway to the moon image that its thrown up in Broome . The stairway to the moon is a natural phenomenon which is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting off the exposed mudflats in Roebuck Bay, at extremely low tide, to create a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon. This occurs March through to October.
We got mobile phone reception at Fitzroy Crossing - some 200km from our roadside camp. We eventually got a vacancy from one campsite that could take both our campervans on one pitch "if we got there by 5pm"
Thus our leisurely drive "towards" Broome came less leisurely and we had to put our foot down to meet the deadline. The campsite is packed to the gunnel's, however beggars cannot be choosers!
The stairway to the moon last 4 nights - and thus it's packed in Broome, but as it was cloudy anyway we decided not to go out within minutes of arriving and to take our chances tomorrow night.
The campsite has a fantastic pool and we were only too pleased to jump into the pool and wash off some layers of accumulated red dust from 2 full days on the road.
Cable beach tomorrow. It was 30 degrees C today so should be a good day for the beach!
Stayed at Cable Beach Caravan Park, 8 Millington Road, Broome, 6725
One of the many single track bridges down Highway 1 - we have not had to stop yet. Most of the smaller rivers are now dry
Break on the road at a "viewpoint"
