Blog by us all!
Jim up at 7am and taxi to pick up campervan.
It is massive - feels more like a bus than a van!. All mod cods, very posh!
Drove it carefully back to hostel , and pretty annoyed to see kids still in bed, but lure of van got them out fast enough.
Then into Darwin, where we immediately scraped a tree (through lack of height awareness - but no damage done) for shopping. Jim went to try and get the internet issue fixed, but queue at shop a mile long. so we have to rely on sporadic wireless.
By 11.00 we were on the road, starting our 3,500 mile journey south. First stop Adelaide river where we haggled a discount on a croc cruise. Touristy of course, but excellent - huge saltwater crocs, that have learned to jump out of the water to catch bait being waived at them from boats, plus birds of prey that swoop to catch meat being chucked out!
From there it was onto Litchfield Park, very full because its Aussie holiday season too - so loads of Aussies in their campervans to accompany the myriad backpackers, "grey nomads" (retired Aussies who migrate in their campervans up north from the cold south of Australia for a couple of months at a time), and others like us on their tours. Thus a huge but friendly mix of campers.
We camped in the National Park - and can vouch we paid our 15 dollar camping fee in the honesty box - we may have been one of the few!
Swam in a waterfall in Litchfield, before enjoying our first night in the campervan at the unpowered site. Still had great facilities including solar heated water. Saw wallaby and wallerroos.
Breeze got up in the night so it was actually not too hot - but a bit cloudy so have not yet experienced the stars.
250km down - quite a number to go.
